Hi All,

Please tell me how to connect 2 computers.
One of them is Win XP PE equipped with the 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940) card
(on the mainboard) and the other one is Win 98 SE equipped with the Intel 21040
card.
In future one of the computers will be connected to the Internet using the HIS adapter
plugged into one of the the serial ports.

I have a network cable which successfully connected the other 2 computers Win NT 4.0. Wkst.
Will it be OK for my computers?

Will Win 98 SE be able to see NTFS partitions on Win XP PE or FAT partitions only?

I need step by step advise on it (like for dummies :-))

Regards
Mat

You may use a network hub...

if there is no need to have any more than those two machines connected...
you can do so without using a hub...but you will need a *crossover* cable.

then connect them and run the neworking wizard from XP

on a network...it does not matter what the files system is of the installed
OS

Greetings --

On the WinXP PCs, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired
shares. Log on to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will
be able to access the designated shares, provided your network is
configured properly. Also, make sure that WinXP's built-in firewall
is disabled on the internal LAN connection.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I don't need a hub as I want to connect just 2 machines.

My cable is a *crossover* one.

Yes.

Filesystem format won't matter. You'll be looking at the shares over the
NetBIOS abstraction layer, so as long as NetBIOS is working between the two
computers, you'll be fine.
