I have the CRX-140E from Sony bought in october 2000. I'm searching at that
site

for a firmware update but i've noticed that in the drop down menu, the only
models shown have the suffix ch or ch2. Mine is simply CRX-140E. Do you know
what those suffixes means? TIA for your reply.

You might try Googling for "crx140e firmware". Many hits showed up when
I tried it although I can't vouch for any of them.

If you look further on the 'site linked, none of the 140E
series have any firmware updates available.

If one isn't compatible with your drive, the flasher should
refuse to flash it, as it checks against the firmware ID
already on the drive. According to the following Google
archived thread, some may require a Vaio system or a
workaround to succeed.

I have done this on my Micro Millenia a couple of times. It was a long time
ago but my CRX-140E is at firmware version 1.0s.

I've finally found a working firmware update program to update from 1.0n to
1.0s my crx-140e there:

Worked flawlesly. The first time i've used it, it said that the computer
needs to be rebooted wich it did, then, after Windows loaded and i executed
the program a second time. It then said to clear anything in front of the CD
tray because it needs to be opened before flashing the firmware. By clicking
OK, it opened the CD tray and then started the flashing process wich took
about 40 seconds. After another reboot, the drive's firware version showed
correctly 1.0s. It did not solved my problem, but the drive is now a little
faster when writing to 700mb CD-RW medias. The problem itself is that i wish
to automate some backup processes using batch files. I won't extend on the
subject of batch files since it would be out of topic, but the basic
procedure is the following: Everyday, i have the Rar.exe program invoked in
a batch file (the later invoked by the tasks scheduler), and that scans
directories (predefined in the batch file) for newly created or modified
files.

If there's some, it archives them and additional command lines in the batch
file, transfer those incremental backup archives to a DirectCD formatted
CD-RW disk that is always ready in the drive to receive them. The problem is
that when manipulating files with some DOS commands instead of the Windows's
graphical user interface, i have some unexpected results. For example, if in
a batch file i apply the command "del J:\backups\*.rar" to remove all
archives, not all of them are deleted (no, any of those archives have the
read-only bit set!). The "del" command have to be reapplied two or three
times to delete a disk wich contains about 250 backup archives. When
repeating many times the delete command, it's always the same archives that
remains undeleted. This must then be related to a problem with the UDF file
system or something similar. Another strange problem i have with DOS
commands is when using the "move" command like in this example:
"move E:\backups\*.rar J:\" The result is that i have the archives copied to
the disk with their original filename, but they weights 0Kb! A copy for each
of them also appears with the correct filesize but they are strangely named
like "PICT#4FF.RAR" instead of the original "pictures.rar" filename. At the
time
i'm writing this, the Roxio support site is unavailable. When it will be so,
i'll post a message there too. I'm using the version 5.3.5.10 of DirectCD.
Maybe this issue have been solved on the newer Drag to Disc product so i
will try. My OS outdated (Win98SE) may also be the cause, so i'll try the
same
packet writing software under WinXP. Thanks for any suggestions...i'll keep
in touch.
