Confused re aspect ratio

I've just returned to MM 2 after a long gap since installing it. I'm
'learning while doing' but stumbling a bit at some basic hurdles. One
is the choice of aspect ratio.

My source images are captured from action in my PC window, and are
about 1024x762. That's close to 4:3. But the ultimate aim, after
making the movie in MM, is to transfer it to DVD and play it on my
wide screen TV, which is 16:9. So, in MM, presumably I should work at
16:9 PAL? If so, should I take steps to first *crop* the source clips?
(I have VirtualDub, which I am also learning, and that allows
cropping.)

If I left a clip at its original shape and size (to see a particular
feature for example), would that then result in vertical black bands
at either side of the TV screen? But with no undesirable squashing or
stretching? Would the same happen with any still 4:3 JPGs I include?

Any advice/insights would be much appreciated please.
