Conflicting AV's???

Have installed Trend Internet Security Pro on a machine that once had
Symantec. Yes I ran the Symantec un-install program BUT it left bits and
pieces so I manually removed them. To my knowledge, and Windows search with
display hidden files, there are no Symantec/Norton files on my C drive.
I started having problems with Trend and sought their assistance. They had
me send them a .txt file of the msconfig32 and therein was a reference to a
Symantec file that is no longer locateable on the machine. Of course Trend
says it isn't there fault, it's the "conflict". BUT they can't tell me how to
remove the reference to the Symantec file from the msconfig32 file.
SO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Where does msconfig32 get it's information?
Can sections of it be "edited"? (like in the old days of autoexec.bat and
config.sys and sys.ini)
Trend and Symantec both refer to the following in the mscongig32 file
"HKU\S-1-5-18\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
Could this be the "conflict" and how do I get one of them (symantec) out?
Is this a registry reference?
Thanks for any and all help.

Did you run the Norton Removal Tool?

You can download this tool "AutoRuns for Windows"
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb963902.aspx
And remove the entry from here:

Locate this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run = look in
the right pane/window and remove the entry for it
"C:\Program Files\Norton"

You can download this tool o run clean up:

When you got rid of Symantec, did you uninstall it first then run the tool
to remove it or just ran the tool? You do have to remove the complete
presence of Symantec not just the files but the registry entries also. You
might have to go thru the registry to search for Symantec and Norton to
remove it completely. I have done this numerous time when the uninstall of
Symantec did not go as planned.

Did you check hidden files in every name in "Documents and Settings",
especially in Administrator and All Users? The Symantec un-install leaves
everything in these.
