Configuring second monitor

I easily extended my desktop onto a second monitor using
the Display section of the Settings tab of the Properties
menu. When I drag the location of Monitor 2 to be to the
left rather than the right of Monitor 1 this also works
easily. The problem is that when I eliminate the second
monitor (for use of my laptop at home), then reextend the
desktop (upon my return to the office), Monitor 2 is back
on the right. Can I set the location of Monitor 2 to
remain on the left, even through repeated switching on and
off of the desktop extension?
