Configuring an LAN connection

My main computer has an LAN connection, configuered by a technician. It is connected to a router with one cable and one usb jack. I want to configure my laptop so I can unplug the computer and plug the cable into it. I went into LAN properties and copied the (TCPI/IP) Properties. I now am connected at 100mbs and am sending but not recieving data. If I click on Firefox the dialup window appears. Can you help?
