Is there a way (registry entry or otherwise) to configure the "disk
clean-up" feature of Accessories in Win XP so as to eliminate the "compress
old files"? I never use this portion of the clean up yet it takes the
longest to load.

To fix Disk Clean up freezes on compressing old files, download this patch
from Kelly Theriot MS-MVP

Delete this registry key to stop Disk Clean Up from compressing old files.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches

See this article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812248

An automated fix is to run the reg file on Kelly's site,
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm.
Line 48: Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes

See the top of the page for info on running the edit.

Merely unchecking the box does not solve the problem for the application
will still run the time consuming procedure. The registry deletion in the MS
KB was the answer. All works fine now. Thanks.

Yes Norman Rock is right. The workaround certainly works
but the Microsoft Article is a bit tongue in cheek! The irritant
is the time taken to calculate the space to be saved not to
compress old files. Not that that might be a problem for
some users.

In my case the file compression facility in Disk CleanUp
has never worked. I can compress files but not using Disk
CleanUp.

Thanks for raising the query. I will now save a few seconds
every time I run Disk CleanUp.
