Trying to connect win2000 PC to broadband modem on home LAN. When I type configip /renew there is a delay and after 2mins following error shows 'error occured renewing adaptor local area connection DHCP server unavailable' it then allocates a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 to the PC so i can conect to nothing thereafter I have the same problem connecting PC to router which has other working PCs connected
Happens on win98 as well on same P
Any pointers appreciate
Thank
Jim

Sorr
That was a typo (configip) in my post, it has taken days to isolate the problem so I am a bit ragged round the edges

If that is modem you need router or enable ICS on your PC.
how that modem connect to your PC(USB, connect to NIC)?
did you follow your modem instructions?
what is your modem make and model?
which ISP do you try to connect?

(If your modem are router enable DHCP Server)

The PC is connected via NIC direct to Motorola SB4100 cable modem and has worked okay in the last few days. Now there is a problem obtaining IP address and always the subnet is 255.255.0.0 which is no good as the modem subnet is 255.255.255.

If I connect my router to the modem with other PCs they can all obtain IP addresses, access the internet and see each other on the network
When I connect the problem PC it has the same problem as above and has difficulty obtaining IP address. I have run ipconfig /all and can see that the NIC has a IP address but the subnet is different from everything else on the network and so will not communicate. The NIC is Reltek 8139/810x. I have downloaded latest drivers for NIC reinstalled windows and tried with win98 and win2000 both with same resul

Here is a direct quote from Microsoft's Broadband Networking Help Page which
you can read here:

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/br...dp_manual.mspx

"If you are connecting your new adapter directly to your broadband modem,
check the documentation from your ISP to find out more about how to install
and configure the access software on your computer. You will not be able to
access the Internet without this software."

The address that the NIC is holding on to is 169.254.28.11 with subnet mask of 255.255.0.

I have loaded the TeleWest sotware on the PC for direct connection (and registered the mac address) but if I connect through the router I should only need to have TCP/IP, and a dynamic IP. This is the way the other PCs are working at the moment

Basically even you going to set up your ip by Manually.
If you have right ip address with client side subnet 255.255.0.0 (host side 255.255.255.0) will work fine.
(here is explain of subnet mask. http://www.dynamicelements.com/Helpfulpages/subnet.htm )

anyway
1. chack your device manager, make sure your SB4100 Device recognize right.
2. try access with IP address setup by manually (copy from other PC (when you connect them) IP address, Subnet, Defaul gateway)
3. Check modem status, when you connect your PC.
4. If PC do not recognized modem right, remove SB4100 one followed byinstruction
http://gicout60.gic.gi.com/customer_...507-001-99.pdf
then reboot PC, and reinstall Software.

If you say Router, make sure your router enable DHCP server.
also if you have firewall software, make sure you have right settings.
