I hope I'm clear here.

I had a corruption of some files of the WinXP Pro operating system and
re-installed OVER the old OS to preserve everything.

It completed as expected, BUT
Now when I boot, I get a warning saying that XP is no longer safe and click
here to update to SP2.
Also expected.
But when I click on the link, Instead of IE opening up, I get an error
involving missing files in an entry point (at work now, don't have exact
error message)
Apparently after googling, it seems that error is because SP2 is now gone.

OK, so I decide to download IE7 but that executable won't run in a non SP2
environment.

So I try to install IE6 which seems to go fine, but when trying to use it, I
get the same error.

So then I find a site to download and install XP2 as a standalone that can
be downloaded via firefox, because the Windows Update site will only work
with IE.

It goes all the way to the end of the installation and then reports that it
can not finish the installation "Access Denied"
And yes the computer is logging on in an administrative account.

Simple breakdown
-Can't update to SP2 without IE6 or better
-IE won't run without SP2

Has anybody seen this?
Any suggestions???

Your operating system is now in quite a tangle. The best thing for you
to do at this point is to back up all your data and do a clean install
of Windows. You can slipstream SP2 into your original install disk if
you like. I realize this isn't what you want to hear, but I do believe
it is the best course of action for you. I'll give you a link for that
particular error message while installing SP2, but probably you are
always going to have problems with that installation. Your call, of course.

You receive an "Access is denied" error message when installing SP2:

well, if you are experiencing
hard ware issues, installing / reinstalling
won't help resolve the corruption of
your system.

however, here are a couple of
links pertaining to installing
win xp and getting sp2 updates.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

if i recall, when windows finalizes
the installation process, it will ask
if you want to download updates.

you should probably say yes or
ok, instead of saying no and
then finalizing your windows
without the updates you are having
trouble downloading on your own...

however, if you are having modem
problems, then this may be the
source of the corruption you are
experiencing and connecting to the
net and downloading updates will
be impossible for you.

some more read if you have
the time:
