Hi folks... I'm having a devil of a time with this one. I'm trying to
get my office network in full running order, and the main task at hand
is creating shared folders for specific users on one machine (so that
they can drop files over to me easier). The problem is this particular
computer's shares are not visible on the network. I can see everyone
else on the network, and they can see me, but they can't see my shares,
and when I try and browse to this computer from another on the network,
I get that good ol' "Access denied" message. Also, every other computer
on the network has full access to the others except for mine.

Pertinent info:
all computers running XP Home version 2002 SP2
Windows firewalls disabled
Guest account is active

This computer is running Norton Internet Security, but I have the
firewall completely disabled. The others are running McAfee Firewall,
with connections allowed for Windows File Sharing. This seems to me the
culprit, as Norton vs McAfee is the only real difference on these
machines.

I've already gone through everything in this handy page,

http://tinyurl.com/gskc4 seemed like it would be very helpful, but I
went through all of these steps and all of Chuck's referenced documents
to no avail.

Anyone want to see an ipconfig /all from the other computers? Same
info, except node type on those is hybrid and the IPs are different
(obviously) though of the same flavor (10.0.0.xxx, same subnet).

So, long story short (too late!), how likely does it seem that this
will be Norton? Admittedly I've always felt Norton was a bit too
aggressive with a lot of its computer nannying, so I'm kind of inclined
to jump to that conclusion. If this seems unlikely, just let me know.
And if anyone wants to walk me through some more arcane XP networking
(this would be so much easier for me under 2000, but I guess I had to
learn eventually) to get to the root of this wacky issue, I appreciate
it.

N.B.: I only have access to these computers while I am at work and when
things are quieter in the afternoons (EST), so this might take a few
days to sort out...

Have you checked both the anonymous and invisible restrictions?

Norton PF is always a good candidate for problem cause. If you don't enable it,
then either configure it properly, or un install it using instructions provided
by Symantec, you could be in for a frustrating experience.

Besides the PFW issue, LSP / Winsock could be involved.

The Winsock fix took care of it. Now all the computers are playing
nicely together, except for one. It still can't see the shared folders.

Is CLAUDIAOFFICE running XP Home or Pro? If Home, you're stuck with that error.
If Pro, check the Remote Registry Service.

I see that you're also running IPX/SPX on at least 1 computer. Are you running
it on all computers? You have to balance your protocols on all computers, or
you can end up with strange browser situations.

Hi Chuck -

CLAUDIAOFFICE is running XP Home, so I guess I'm stuck with that, but I
think at this point we're okay... There was a whole mess of extraneous
stuff installed on the trouble computer (a laptop an employee brings in
from home who was kinda protective of it), so I removed all of that and
then ran the Winsock fix tool and now, everything is fine.

So we're great! Thanks very much. I owe ya a beer if you're ever in
Western Mass.
