hi guys

i have a small network setup at home consisting of a old p200 running
Win98SE and a p4 running WinXP. i set up a network between the two
comps about 3-4 months ago and it worked perfectly. however the other
day i attempted to share internet axx between the two (internet is
only available on the p200 via 56k dialup, the p4 has no modem as i
bought it for for specific use) and although i fail to remember
completely what i changed in the network options on the XP comp i
somehow ****ed it up.

now the comps wont recognise each other, and i have tryed to make new
connections in the new connection and network setup wizards of my XP
comp with no success.

i recall playing around with the Local Area Connection Properties >
Advanced > Internet connection firewall option possibly also checking
the box and clicking settings down the bottom and checking net access
to Web server (HTTP) sites

Now i just get home and on my Win98 comp i see this msg

"Your computer was unable to reach a special network server (DHCP) to
renew its address. Do you want to see further messages relating to
network config"

i clicked yes but nothing happened.

also when i try to right click on my local area connection and choose
the "repair" option i get this msg

"the following steps of the repair operation failed: renewing the ip
address. please contact your network admin or isp"

finally when i plug in the network cable and both comps are in there
states where they should work networked (both powered up etc). the XP
comp shows the little networking icon down the bottom, can send
packets but can not recieve

thank you i would appreciate your help. i will send much good karma in
return

First, if the internet connection firewall option is still checked try
unchecking it, if that doesn't work try uninstalling and reinstalling
all the protocols listed in the connection properties on both computers.
