- AMD Duron 1.3GHz
- 128MB DDR SDRAM
- 40 GB HDD
- 52X CD-ROM Drive
- Integrated 4X AGP
- RealTek 8139C Ethernet onboard
- Integrated Sound
- Windows XP

I'm not sure if this is the right place but I hope so.

I was online, my computer was working fine, I go into the kitchen for
a minute
and came back to find my computer turned off (however, a red light was
still
on) and a burning smell emitting from the computer. So I turn it off
completely, open it up and notice the heatsink is really hot. All
three fans seem to be working or at least rotating but now it won't
turn on. The bios won't beep nor will Windows load, however a red
light comes on, the fans come on, the cdrom comes on, and that's it.

Do you think my motherboard is fried?
Could my hard drive been affected?
New power supply?

I'm lost
thank you

JD

It definately sounds like something was fried, probably your processor.
Sounds like your CPU fan may have stopped running; I have heard of this
happening a lot with AMD processors actually; they tend to run very hot even
with a fan. I'm just guessing of course but that would be the first thing I
checked.

same thing happened to my old computer...though i don't
know how it happened to yours if there was nothing there
to touch anything. my mother board was fried when i was
installing an ethernet card, and it did the same things
as yours, everything would turn on but it wouldn't start
up. i'm buddy, but your mobo is fried

Thank you for the responses. Hmm, so the consensus is it's either my mobo or
my cpu. Btw, my cpu fan seems to be working.

Okay, I can't really get this fixed due to my financial situation at
the moment; however, I'd really like to know if my hard drive and its
files suffered any damage and if I can retrieve any of it.

Would it be possible to set the hard drive as a slave in another XP
machine? I'm pretty much a newbie to this kind of stuff, so any
advice
would be greatly appreciated When you're setting up a slave drive,
does it have to be formatted? The other machine has a different
motherboard, so would there be driver errors? etc

I have almost an identical situation, same computer amd xp1600+,
128mb, everything is similar... My computer won't turn on either, but
it worked temporarily just by messing with the plug ins. Try
switching the memory into the other slot.
