I stut down my computer and power-off the surge protector everyday. The last
couple of days when I power up the surge protector, my computer start by
itself w/o needing to press the power button about 75% of the time. I don't
think it is a BIOS setting to auto-start for two reasons: 1. it does not
happen all of the time, 2. I never messsed with the setting. I have
also noticed a website for American Megatrends on the startup screen
displaying when this happens. Spyware??
Any clues?

American Megatrends (AMI) is a BIOS maker. I would still check in the BIOS
settings for anything connected with Wake On LAN. You might also check to
see if you have any AMI automatic update software (or automatic diagnostic
software) installed. It most definitely is not spyware but perhaps there is
a problem with your motherboard. You might want to examine the AMI website
that appears and see if it is linking you to a page with troubleshooting or
updates.

Otherwise, if this is an OEM computer (Dell, HP, etc.) I would contact their
tech support. If this is a generic or home-built computer, check with the
motherboard mftr.'s tech support.

In addition to what malke has said, check APM Configuration
under the Power menu in BIOS. Look at the "Restore On AC
Power Loss" setting. The default setting is Power Off. If it's
set to Power On, the PC will restart when AC power is
reconnected. When set to Last State, the PC will either power up,
or stay off, depending on whether is was running or shut down
before AC disconnection. These are AMI BIOS settings.
