Computer sometimes locks up and runs slow.

      4th Nov 2003
This laptop was given to me with Windows 2000 professional
on it. I am not that computer savvy but it sometimes locks
up or is slow to respond even though I am on a high speed
connection. I don't know if there is something I can do to
test the computer before having to take it to someone to
see if I can fix this myself. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Those symptoms would lead me to believe that you may not be protected
from viruses and trojans. Are you using any Anti-virus and firewall
software?

I also have these same problems with my laptop. It also
has w2k professional. It runs constantly & sometimes
takes what seems an eternity to do anything. I do have
Norton Antivirus. I have no viruses. I just ran a complete
scan. Please help.

Is your antivirus properly updated?
Is there spyware installed? (check with a free spyware removal tool, as
ad-aware - www.ad-aware.com - these aren't detected by virusscanners)
is your system properly updated? (service packs, drivers, ...)
