I have a Dell demisions computer with Windows XP. When I turn it on,
it will run for about 10 seconds, the fan will run, then the computer
shuts off, and then starts
again, and it continues in this cycle. Any ideas?

This is amazing. It sounds like the same problem that I'm ahving with my
Dell Dimension 9100 with Windows XP. Mine runs for just a couple secords at
the most then stops. It would keep doing it for ever if i left the power
strip on.

I don't have a boot disk to try btu this sounds just like what I'm
experiencing. How can I create a boot disk now that the machine is dead?

Help, is anyone out there? I still can't get the computer going. I would
try to boot from a CD if I had one AND if I could get the CD tray to open up.
How do you do that when the machine has no power?

Tonight I opened up the box and cleaned out some dust out of it. I can see
that the fans on both the power unit and the one in the front of the maching
run when it tries to start up, I can hear the disk drive running too. Then
it beeps and shuts down, nothing appears on the screen. AND I cannot get the
CD drives to open up, held the buttons in pressed them when they blinked,
nothing.

I need some ideas please.

Thanks, Ken

Sounds like we have the same exact problem, I can sometimes get
the CD to open after several attemps, before it shut down, and loading
in the windows XP CD did not change anything. I tried to use an
emergency start-up disk and it did nothing. I have been asking around
and have not recevied any helpful information. I am going to
ask around some more and will let you know if I find out what the
problem is. I guess I can always use it for a boat anchor. Mike

Hi Mike, Have you tried a boot.ini on a floppy? I have a n external floopy
that I'm going to try to plug into the USB and turn it on to see what it
does.

The darn machine is only 8 months old PLUS there's a ton of stuff on there
that we need to get to. We homeschool as well and use the computer a lot.

Please let me know if you come up with anything and I will also. I'm also
running a ticket like this one on the Dell forum hoping that they'll find
something. My warranty ran out and I'm just about to call them and tell them
that I'll pay for a little help, but struggling a bit with that.

I wonder if it's an automatic update from microssoft that nailed us. That
just happened to us a week ago with the one that messed up the HP scanner, MS
Word and Internet Explorer. Also had a problem about a year ago with our old
Windows ME machine. Never saw anything from Microsoft to reverse the problem
on that one.

Ken
I was able to get my computer to boot up. I opened the
computer and poked around inside. I removed
and reinserted all cards, unpulgged and reinserted all
cables. When I went to start the computer, it booted up.
I do not know whick of the components was the problem, but
at this point, I am happy to have it running -Mike
