Computer shutdown

My problem is my laptop will not complete a virus scan.
It keeps shutting down every time I try to run one. I've
been back and forth with Symantec, uninstalling
antivirus, deleting files, reinstalling antivirus, and
haven't been able to fix the problem. I've tried doing a
complete reinstall of the OS (XP)and the laptop shutdowns
about half way through the install. I've been it touch
with Toshiba and a BIOS flash didn't help either. Now I'm
here to see if someone has any ideas.
