Hey,

My computer had been on for 2-3 days, operating normally, thought it could
use a reboot so I turned it off. The only oddity was that when it was turning
off I had two end program windows pop up, one was "MCI Command Handing
Window" which ended itself, the other was explorer.exe which being impatient
just clicked End Now.

When I turned the computer back on it started up normally. Windows asked for
my user password (I'm the only user, I just password protect the computer) I
entered it, my desktop background appeared and that was it. I have tried
several restarts but to no avail. I can bring up the task manager but that's
it.

The computer seems to have stopped responding before the desktop is
displayed and I'm not sure why. There were no upgrades or any significant
software/hardware changes recently.

I'm running SP2 on:
Motherboard: ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+
Memory: 2048 DDR2
GPU: 2x SLI MSI GeForce 7600 GS 256MB

So its not as if my computer should be freezing up because it's lacking in
terms of components.... I'm at a loss, any insight would be appreciated.

is this the only option? Seeing as I can't attempt to do method 1 or 2
because I have no "My Computer" to click on or anything for that matter I'm
left with only the repair method. Sort of a pain, it doesn't make sense, no

Try:

Method 1.

Open Task Manager > Switch to "Process" tab > If there is a process named
"explorer.exe", end it > Then start it again by, File-New-explorer.exe
If everything is now, follow the microsoft steps.

Method 2
Start your computer in "Safe Mode".
If everything is now, follow the microsoft steps.

There is a high chance that this is some kind of malware or something that is now
started with your boot. The basic step is:
1. Run msconfig > Choose "Diagnostic startup" > Reboot pc > If everything is right
first run step 2 then try to figure out which was that thing in Startup tab and
Services tab.
2. run your AntiVirus + Spyware remover and these kind of applications.

method 1, I can end the explorer.exe program but whenever I go to
File-New-and type anything in this box it freezes. It also freezes if I
attempt to shut down from the task manager.

How do I make it reboot in safe mode?

I meant to add I know restart-F8--> select safe mode.... but when I do this I
do not seem to have the option for safe mode, just the list of boot devices.

msconfig did it, it was able to start, running ad-aware and norton now,
hopefully I can find what is causing this, I do not do a whole lot of "web
surfing" I go to places that I know, seldom else where. Thanks so much for
your help! Hopefully I'll get this figured out

So what was the thing you disabled in msconfig.

If you chose Diagnostic then Go to startup tab in msconfig and in the list, there
will path and name of files. Inspect them or search for the name on web.

there is nothing that I have found on the list that would be malicious...
except perhaps "dumprep 0 -k"

I do not think this is a malacious startup item but other people seem to
have had problems regarding it. I'm trying to learn more about it, but I
don't really understand.

Neither Norton nor Ad-aware SE found anything malicious..... this is very
frustrating because I haven't done anything that I can thing of that would
have resulted in this.
