Computer running XP not turning off

Occasionally, Office opens partially, as seen on my monitor, and then within
15 to 20 seconds it opens completely. This is one symptom I can find that
may cause my computer to occasionally not turn off. Another problem I have
been able to find is the CPU usage will go to 100%, even though I am not
running a program at the time. At the point I am unable to shut down in the
traditional way. When the CPU is at 100%, the process that is running at
97% of CPU time is Image Name: system and User Name: SYSTEM.

When it hangs up at shut-down, it is at the "Windows shutting down screen.
From that point I do a soft reboot and when it restarts, I can then turn
off.

Any help would be very much appreciated...............Mike Wolpert
