I updated my PC through Windows update last night and now it will not start.
It freezes right before the memory check starts and will just sit there. Is
there something in the update that messed it up? My copy is a legal one I
purchased through my school.

What memory check are you talking about? There is no memory check once
windows takes over and starts to boot. That sounds like that's part of the
hardware POST (Power on Self Test) and if it's freezing there, it's a
hardware problem, and not anything to do with software or any update. I
suggest you post to a hardware newsgroup.
