I have not done anything new to my computer but for some reason it is not
recognizing my d drive. I look in my control panel and it is not there. I

Is d drive your CD Rom drive or a data drive?

Assuming d drive is your ROM drive i.e. DVD/CD-ROM drive

You won't find d drive in Control Panel. Try double clicking My Computer or hold down the Windows key [usually between the Ctrl and Alt keys] and press E. If it does not show your D drive it may be disconnected within the computer case. If you're not comfortable opening the case and checking it out, take it to a computer shop and ask them to assist you. It usually would still show in My Computer even it if was not working. Another way to check if it is connected, is to open up the Device Manager.

You can open Device Manager by double-clicking on the System icon in Control Panel, choosing the Hardware tab, and clicking Device Manager or right click on My Computer, select Properties, click on Hardware tab, click on Device Manager.

My favourite because it is the quickest is, click on Run from the Start button, type devmgmt.msc and the Device Manager will open. You should see a listing for DVD/CD-ROM drives, click on the [+] and you should see your ROM type listed.

If it is a data drive it should be listed under 'Disk Drives, click on the [+] and it should show all available data drives.

in "My Computer" and shows "Windows Successfully loaded the device
drivers but can't find the device" In Control Panel\System\ Hardware\
Device Manager\ CD-DVD Drives.

Go to Start>Run type: regedit click Ok Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
click on and look in righthand panel for Upper and Lower Filters.
Delete both or
either one if there. Restart.

Thanks for the info. When I navigated to where you told me to go after I ran
the regedit, the only thing there in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.. was a part
called default type REG_SZ. Is this what I am supposed to delete? Sorry if
this is a dumb question, computers are not my strong point. Thank you for

There should be a lot more in there than just REG_SZ, don't delete
anything in there.

The drive it self may have failed, it may be better for you to take the
machine to a computer repair place and have them take a look at it.

I guess I will have to take it to the repairshop. REG_SZ was the only thing
in that part. I tried putting a cd in and I could hear it spinning and the
light turned green, but nothing happened. But thanks to GreenieLeBrun and

Close regedit. Close down computer, then restart and then try your dvd/cd-rom drive again.

If still no luck, take to a computer repair shop. I would say you need dvd/cd-rom drive.

Thanks again. I did as you said and the words Upper and Lower Filters didn't
appear, only the default did. I did find something to reinstall my drives at
www.dougknox.com. I went to windows utilities and restore my dvd/cd drive.
I downloaded and did what it said and it worked. Well, it did until my
computer turned off/standby mode and when I logged on again it was
gone(dvd/cd drive). I ran it couple of more times and it didn' t appear. I
waited awhile did it again and it was back. But as soon as my computer goes
to standby or has to be restarted it disappears. Oh well, to the computer
shop we go. Thanks again, Touch Base and GreenieLeBrun for everything.

Dear people, I hope anybody reads this thread, because it looks like
the discussion ended in the "repair shop". I have similar problems on
my IBM Thinkpad. One day my DVD ROM was gone, both in Explorer and in
the Device manager. I deleted Upper and Lower in regedit, no solution.
Sometimes (and I cannot pinpoint under what circumstances this happens)
my DVD suddenly is back, but after rebooting, gone again.
First I thought it was a heat problem, later I came to think that it
has have something to do with a Windows update (I get a lot of updates
these last weeks). I do not believe that my hardware is failing (when
you enter a CD it makes the "rights noise"), so my guess it is a
software problem, but where? I will try this dougknox thing as well and
see what happens. I can only hope I'm right and more people will
report the same problem.
