I have a computer that, of all DVD Burners I've tried, refuses to burn
any dvd. It gives some error saying either the drive isn't installed
or that the media is incompatable.

I've already swaped out and tried 3 different drives, rebooted and
everything.

Can someone help?

Does the drive show up in the bios? If not then from what you say it could
be that the IDE channel or the data cable are bad. You might try connecting
the drive to the same cable as your hard drive as a slave, while jumpering
the hdd as a master with slave.

Is this system running any particular OS, something like
Unix or FreeNAS or LynxOS or ??

Let's suppose windows, since it's a popular one. Does the
drive show up properly identified in Device Manager? Did
you update your burning software to latest version or at
least patched to support these specific drives? This latter
variable is the most common problem sometimes even occurring
with the software shipped with the (retail packaged) drive.

Get a new 80 pin IDE cable - if that's the interface
If its SATA drives, you definitely have to have the latest firmware for the drive AND
patches for the software.
The software must recognize the drive.
NO ZIP drives on the same IDE as the burner

This post is a little light on details so it's difficult to give
specific advice. You don't mention any specific OS but since this
has been cross posted to an XP group I'll assume that that is what
you are using.

I also assume from reading between the lines that the drive is
recognised by Windows at least as a DVD-ROM drive, and you can read
disks using the drive OK. If this isn't the case then there is an
issue to be addressed before you even consider burning.

What burner software are you using? Older software for Windows
9x/ME won't work with XP since they can't handle XP's slightly more
robust security. Even with newer software you may need to be logged
in as an administrator to get the required privileges for burning.

Again, more details would still be useful. What make/model drive
is it? How is it connected? Details of the motherboard may be
helpful too.

1. Does the BIOS see the drive?
2. Does the OS see the drive?
2a. What IS your OS by the way?
3. Does the drive work for reading a CD or DVD?
4. What burning software are you trying to use?
5. Have you tried other burning software?
5a. Just in case, do you know that Windows, by itself,
can write to CD but not to DVD?

If you are running Windows, you might try downloading Nero Info Tool
(assuming you don't already have it) and running that to see what it
thinks of your drive and system. If you don't have the program, you can
download it here: http://www.nero.com/enu/downloads-infotools.html
It is a valuable tool for many troubleshooting tasks.
