computer is not acknowledging printing requests-I cannot print

I tried using the printing trouble shooter multiple times and cannot figure
out why I cannot print. I have tried test pages, notepad, word, ecetera.
While attempting to print, I have watched the task bar for printing, it
appears for a moment that there is a job to print and then it disappears and
nothing prints. I am able to use my printer for copying and scanning. I use
windows XP and a Dell photo 924 printer.
Help please,
