For years I have set my computer to go into standby when unused for a period
of time (30 minutes) for some reason it has stopped going into standby.
The monitor goes to sleep and I can hear the hdd attempting to disconnect
but it will not go into a complete standby state.
If I click "Start\Turn Off Computer\Standby" it still will not go into
standby as it did several weeks ago. I have another computer set up
essentially the same way and it continues to function as I have set it up.
I am at wits end to figure it out. I can usually find the cause to these
little inconveniences but this one has me baffled.
I am beginning to suspect a hardware problem i.e. power supply or what ever
hardware is involved with the sleep state.
I would like some suggestions for things to look for.
Intel D850MVSE motherboard P4 with 1gig of ramous memory SCSI hard drives
which all work find. WinXP SP3 etc



If I log on as the administrator and allow my
computer to remain idle it will go into standby (sleep mode) and come out
with either keyboard activity or mouse movement.
It will not perform in the same way when logged on as myself.
This pretty confirms it is not a hardware issue.



It almost appears that a file has been over written in one specific user
account.
Is there a common file that windows uses for activating standby mode??. If
there is would replacing it likely correct this problem?

If you are using Windows Media Player 9 or higher. There is a toggle in
the options about stopping the screen saver or something. That was
stopping my computer from going to standby. If WMP isn't running, it has
to be something. Close programs in the system tray and try. If it isn't
that, stop startup programs from starting. You should be able to figure
it out from that.

Is Microsoft going to pay for all of those Asus EEE PC upgrades to a
higher SSD (solid state drive) to make SP3 fit on them? If not,
Microsoft should be giving discounts for Windows retail install packages
that has no customer support for them.

I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951447 and this did not correct
problem.
Why would my computer function properly when I switch user to Administrator
from my User Account (also Administrator account) but not when logged on in
my personal account.
All very strange. It had been working and performing well until recently.
I would think that what ever the problem in my account would effect the
logging on in other accounts and vice versa.
Any more suggestions?

Create the new user account and check the same in new user account

If u are able to use the standby feature then your user accout has gone
corrupt

so you need to transfer the file from older user account to new one

support.microsoft.com/kb/811151 (transfer the data from corrupt user account
to new one)

Many Asus users buy the Linux version and realize they can't download
more applications and then go out and buy retail versions of Windows XP
and installs them.

In my case I got the Windows XP version, but my external DVD burner and
Ghost don't like each other. Asus uses Ghost to restore Windows XP. So I
had to go out and buy a retail version of Windows XP just to get it
going again.
