Computer locks up during defrag with Serial ATA drive

I just installed a Western Digital Serial ATA Raptor 10,000 rpm hard drive
with a western digital controller card. I am running windows xp home edition
with sp 2 installed.

I have the hard drive split into two partitions; C and D. I can defrag D ok,
but when I go to defrag C, it will lock up shortly after it begins the
defragmentation process.

Any ideas? I did a check disk, and even tried it in safemode and it still
won't work.
