Two things which helped me (Outlook 2003) recently:
1. Run the inbox repair tool on your .pst file (the tool, scanpst.exe, may
be in Program Files/Common Files/System/MSMAPI/1033)
2. Turn off Automatic Updates - or maybe just download the latest.
