Computer hangs at XP splash screen

When I restart in safe mode, system restore generates
error message. Last good configuration is garbage.
Using My Computer, A drive, computer will not read
Windows patch - generates error message. Error message
appears when I try to run McAfee virus scan. Computer
generates error message when I try to Search for worm
files. (Error message offers to generate a report for
Microsoft but Explorer isn't working either.)
