Can anyone please help me to sort this out. My computer has started to freeze
up on a regular basis so i have run a disk cleanup and it wont go past the
compress old files part without freezing up. i have run a defrag, an avg
virus check and a spybot check all of which complete with no problem but
cannot get past this point, what am i doing wrong? Thanks, Will

It could be a driver issue. Boot into safe mode and see if you can run
defrag and disk clean up. Also run a program called Trojan Remover. It's a 30
day free trial. You might also consider formatting the hard drive and
starting fresh. Also make sure your computer isn't over heating. Power supply
might be going bad.

There are numerous possible reasons for freeze-ups. The way to diagnose such
a problem is the 'half-split' method, that is, try to eliminate half of the
possibilities, then half of the remainder again, and so on until you've
narrowed it down. The first logical step is to eliminate hardware as the
cause. Run a live-CD OS such as BartPE, Knoppix, Ubuntu or the like and see
if the problem still occurs. If it does, it cannot be related to the Windows
install, so it's most likely hardware-related.

Hardware-wise the most common culprits are faulty or unseated memory, a
failing PSU, or a seized fan and consequent processor overheating.

If not hardware, suspect a software issue such as malware or a bad
device-driver.

It's also worth checking the event viewer for any information which might be
helpful. Look for any items reported immediately before the freeze.

I hate to say, but to be completely honest, if you have done all that
properly, I'm inclined to conclude that it is time to install a fresh version
of your operating system. Don't just do a "quick format" but a full format
of the hard drive during reinstallation.

As a last resort before the above, you can check your system restore points
over the last few days to see if there is anything that you installed or any
Windows-based updates that were installed around the time that this problem
began to transpire. Go to your Start menu, click on "Run" and type in
"msconfig". Click on "Launch System Restore", then select the option button
that reads "Restore my computer to an earlier time." Look at the time
options on the last few days and any installation events that occurred. If
there is one that occurred around the time the problem began, select that
date/time and restore your computer to that point. When Windows starts back
up, accept the copied files that Windows creates.

See if that works. If it doesn't, then the five hour drag of reinstalling
Windows - and then all your prograsm - will be necessary.

When you run Disk Cleanup, it calculates how much space you could save
on your HDD if you choose to compress
"old" files. If you have a zillion files XP thinks are old, it could
take a long time to figure that out and appear to stop responding. It
also may really be hung since MS tells you how to stop this check for
file compression in a knowledgebase article (maybe they don't like it
either).

You need to figure out if it is taking to long or really hung.

If you (like me) have no interest in compressing old files, you can
have Disk Cleanup skip that calculation entirely. You'll be skipping
along in no time when that check is removed.
