computer freezes when trying to enter standby mode

My computer uses Windows XP and whenever I try to enter the standby mode it
freezes up. I found that if I first go to the "turn off computer" window and
wait long enough (10-15 seconds) and then click "standby" then it doesn't
freeze up... but if I click "standby" right away then it freezes. Is there a
patch to fix this problem?
