Computer freezes after unplugging CD-ROM drive

I'm running Win2K Pro SP4 on a Dell Latitude CSx system.
Everything works fine until a few days ago my computer
freezes after I unplugged my CD-ROM drive through normal
procedure (Unplug or eject hardware). After Win2K displays
the information dialog 'The TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-7002B device
can now be savely removed fromt he system', I simply
clicked OK and remove the external CD-ROM drive. That's
when my computer freezed. Anybody have any idea how this
happened?

Any suggestions are welcome. The sooner the better 'cause
this is urgent. Thanks.
