Computer blacksceened while idling. No message, just
a black screen. POST yields 1 longer beep, then 8
short beeps. Gigabyte 8IHXP mainboard, AMIBIOS
vintage 2001. Temps OK; all fans working. Tried
reseating everything. 8 beeps alone would indicate a
problem with the video card, but I'm confused about the
initial longer beep. Does anyone know what that is?

"The video adapter is either missing or defective."

don't know about the one long beep
but the 8 short beeps may mean a meory error...
try reseating/cleaning the memory or else try different memory

i'd prob try a different video card if none of the above has any effect

Thanks! I've updated my list of beep codes. And I
guess I'll be getting a new video card.

Erm, do you ever bother reading others' replies before adding your own?! It
has nothing whatsoever to do with RAM. Vanguard knows what he's talking
about - he's been frequenting alt.comp.hardware for years - and they soon
jump on you there if you don't!

Cerridwen,

I read many of these posts from newbies and understand that they don't know
"how to post properly" and realize that they need help.

They don't need some smart ass bitch like you sending zingers out in just about
every reply that you make. You are not a policewoman nor are any of your
opinions of any redeeming value. If you can't offer real help, or if you can't
provide a courteous reply then maybe this note will give you a clue. This is a
forum for people to obtain assistance, even folks that haven't read other posts
or newsgroups and don't forget it!

I suggest you take a well needed course at "Charm School." Grow up you little
bitch.

Have a nice day, Joe

Why post this in an XP hardware group? POST occurs long before the XP
even begins to load, making it off topic here.

In the very strictest sense, more than 90% of the posts here are "off
topic".

Fortunately, most of the smart people overlook that fact and do their best
to be of assistance
