Computer errors, etc.

I am getting several errors lately with various programs. Someone told me
that you could run a scan of the computer that would tell you the problems
that the computer had and these could be corrected. Is there a trusted
reliable free program that would check the computer, give the results of
problems and then correct them without harming the current programs, etc.
Would appreciate any help regarding this. I am a novice user so I would need
to know that I would not crash the computer doing this.

No such program exists. But if you want to tells us about these errors,
with specific details, we will try to help.

"How to ask a question"

will help you to create a question that is more likely to provide the
help you are seeking.

Are there any problems indicated in the System and Application logs?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

No, such a program doesn't exist. But please be much more specific
about what programs you are having the errors with and much more
specific about what the errors are. If you get error messages, please
cite them verbatim.

Two of the main errors I get are as follows: Outlook Express when I try to
save a picture the following error message comes up:Cannot locate
C:\Windows\system 32\mshtml. hlp file. The other error I get is re the Excel
program which was installed on the computer when purchased but I am unable to
use Excel. The error is: The feature you are trying to use is on a CD_ROM or
other removable disk that is not available. Insert the Microsoft Office 2000
SR-1 Premium Disk (which I tried and it won't let me install the program as a
message states it is already installed. I tried to uninstall the program and
am not allowed to do that either). Error 1706-No valid source can be found
for windows installer. At times the computer does freeze up but eventually
will be ok. Hope this information is what you all needed.
