My computer doesn't start. I switch the power button, HDD light turns on and
remains, and nothing happens. Monitor doesn't get any signal from the

Is there any 'bleep' from the motherboard? - if not then in it's almost
certainly not a Windows problem, but a hardware one

Which OS are you using? - Win ME or Win 2K ?? They are NOT the same thing!!

There's no a beep from the motherboard. Yes. It's not a Windows problem.
Where to post a question about a hardware problem?
I use Win ME.

Dmitriy - VERY carefully, make sure all electrical cable connections and
devices inside the machine are firmly and correctly seated and all
motherboard and device jumpers are correctly set. You may need the
manual to check correctness. This is not a software problem. All you
know appears to be that the machine is receiving power.

Then if the problem remains unchanged, you had best find a local
technician who can diagnose hardware problems. There are too many
possibilities to make it worthwhile trying to do this over the network,
particularly if you have little technical experience. Among those
problems is a BIOS CMOS that has failed (you might also try replacing
the little battery on the motherboard, for that matter.)

I sense you have little experience, because in your original post you
include almost no useful facts (like, for example, whether this machine
has ever worked correctly, whether you just bought it new or used,
whether it has been sitting in a closet for 5 years, or whether there
have been any recent hardware changes.) Hardware problems can be very
tricky for anyone, much less the novice.

Yes, it *should*. The cr2032 is the usual 'standard' CMOS battery. If it is
too thick, you could try cr2025 which is slightly slimmer.

BTW - are you able to boot your PC into real mode DOS using the Windows Me
Startup (floppy) Disk in the A: drive?

I'm not able to boot the PC into real mode DOS using the Windows Me Startup
(floppy) Disk in the A: drive. Monitor doesn't show anything. Floppy drive
doesn't check for a floppy disk.

That *sounds* very serious Dmitriy, I doubt if the battery is the problem,
even a flat battery will normally fire-up the video card, even if you can't
get any further - but it is the cheapest first test <g>

See Dan's suggestion earlier, go and visit your local repair centre - unless
you have access to a spare motherboard, power unit, video card, ... etc.,
.... etc., to substitute and localise the problem.

It really does appear to be serious.

Good luck - and let's hope it is only the battery!

I flashed BIOS codes several times but not on that computer.
