Computer does not respond to ping on network

We have a Windows XPSP2 computer on our network that does not respond to
a ping from any other machine. Pinging the machine by its name does
resolve to proper IP address however the request times out. This
computer shows up in network places on all other machines in the
network, however, attempting to connect to it fails as well as
attempting to connect to any shares on the subject machine.

I have confirmed that all firewalls on the machine are turned off.

Attempts to ping and/or connect to other machines in the network from
the problem machine are succesfull.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

Sure sounds like a firewall issue.
In fact, I'd go so far as to say I'm 99.9999999% sure of it.

Are you *sure* there are no firewalls running you may not have spotted?

A common one is the Cicso VPN client setting up it's own firewall.
Is there a VPN client installed?

Has there ever been another firewall on the machine, and then un-installed?
For example ZoneAlarm can leave debris behind after an incorrect un-install.

There were no firewalls, other than XPSP2 installed on that machine,
however, the Cisco VPN client is installed. however, it is installed on
several other machines as well, and they have no problems. On this
machine, I have disabled it from starting. I will try uninstalling the
cisco client on that machine and test when I next have access to that
machine.

Aha!

Look at the configuration of the VPN client.
Look for the option for 'Stateful Firewall ( Always On )'.
I've come across this becoming enabled accidentally.

Ron:
Thanks for your help. There was a problem with the Cisco VPN client on that
machine. Although the client was disabled, the stateful firewall seemed to
have still been blocking access. I have uninstalled the client and all is
working fine now.
