I'm writing this in Safe mode.

I built computer in 2/07. Running perfect until now.
OS Vista Ultimate SP1
Video card ASUS EN7950GT GeForce 7950 GT 512M
MotherBd Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 2GB RAM

Cannot boot in full mode. Splash screen had vertical lines. If it gets
to the desktop it will reboot. Can get into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode error messages suggests Video Error.
Also ran MemTest86 V1.70. Came up with an error

Went looking for a new video card. MB only has PCI Express X16 card
slot. It seems that new boards use PCI Express 2.0 X16.
Ques - Will a PCI Express 2.0 X16 video card work in my card slot?

Ques - Do you think my RAM error could be causing this problem?

Some suggestions:

Check to see if there has been any updates to your video driver have
been installed.

Remove video card from it's slot and then reinstall. Do the same for
your memory sticks.

For a free memory testing program:

http://www.memtest.org/


......or if you have a linux LiveCD kicking around, the above program is
usually included and listed as one of the boot menu options.

If memory test comes up with an error then you either need to reduce your
memory to a single stick, retest that, then replace the stick with the next
one & retest that.
No point in trying anything with the vid card till youve elliminated the
failing ram stick

Yes there was and I just downloaded and installed it. So far so good
but I'm in Classic mode. We'll see when I put more stress on the video.

Good suggestion. I just updated the driver and will check that out.
Pulling the chassis out of the computer desk is a major pain. I'll do
that before I order any replacement parts.

While in safe mode check the resolution you are sending with your graphics
card to your display. What you will see is the resolution that will be sent
from a normal boot. I do not think that there is anything wrong with your
graphics card since it at runs in safe mode.
What safe mode error messages suggested a graphics card error?
Video error messages could be referring to a TV/Video capture card error
and not to a graphics card error. And yes a memory error could easily be
causing error messages about other components.

I just pulled the computer apart and reseated the video card and RAM
sticks. Also vacuumed the insides, etc. So far so good.

The error message was a Windows message that came up while in safe mode.

Anyhow that is one of many like messages received.

If the problem persists I'll be pulling a memory stick and try to
isolate the problem area.
