hi i have a problem with my laptop (dell inspirion 1501), i updated
the ram from 512mb to 1536mb, then i went to update the graphics
driver (ati 1150 i think) the driver installation was going ok until
it was just about to finish then the laptop crashed and the blue
screen of death came up, it restarted its self and when it got to the
logon screen the screen resolution was big but when i logged on it
changed back to normal but shortly after that the laptop crashed but
this time no error message just a black screen i had to turn it off
manually.
could the graphics driver be corrupt? i have all the restore disks
with me and all the data is backed up so reinstalling xp would be an
option if i hate to do that.

running winxp home sp2

any thoughts?

Will it boot to safe mode?
Presumably you were installing the update from Dell?

If you can boot in safe mode, navigate to device manager, right click
the graphics card, select properties, select the driver tab, and click
the roll back driver button. That will get you back to the driver that
was presumably working correctly before all this happened.

You "Think"? Then how do you know you are installing the correct drivers?

First Identify the exact ATI chipset your laptop has.
GoTo ATI's website and download the latest drivers for it.
Ensure you download the full "package" and note the install
instructions.
All graphics, regardless if a PCI-express card or an onboard chipset
such as with a laptop, have to meet a basic criteria that they can
display an image onscreen with just the OS basic drivers.
The usual (But not always) method is to fully uninstall all current
graphics drivers, Then ReBoot.
Upon Reboot XP's found new hardware will install XP's basic drivers.
At this point you have to follow ATI's instructions for that *specific*
chipset.
It maybe you have to install the traditional way via Device Manger etc.
But some updates are self extracting and may just require you
clicking on the setup.exe in the downloaded folder.
So read and follow the guide for your graphics on the ATI site.

Please post a copy of the Stop Error Report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

thank you all for responding, when i booted my computer it booted
normaly, so i was able to roll back the graphics driver in device
maneger and so far so good, i will post back if it crashes again, and
if it does i will post the stop code.
