however I can not map a drive or see the file servers or other computers on
the LAN from this computer. (Windows XP SP 3 and updates are up to date)

The computer sees the My Network Places\Entire Network\Microsoft Windows
Network\our domain. however when i click on our domain it sits there and
nothing comes up, no error message, nothing. Also The other options that
usually come up under Entire Network do not show up (Microsoft Terminal
Services and Web Client Network) we do not use those but on every computer it
shows up but this one.

I have:
1) ran malwarebytes full scan-results no malware
2) defraged the computer
3) Ran the Repaired for the Windows OS.
4) ran TrendMicro anti-virus - results - no viruses
5) removed the computer from the domain, placed it in a temp workgroup,
rebooted. added the computer back into the domain, rebooted and still having
the problem.

Besides format and install the OS again, what else can i try to get the
computer to access the file servers on the LAN?

I am able to go out on the internet.
The original reason why i started to work on this computer was the user
complained that it was very slow --after rebooting the computer would take
forever to load network settings, profile etc. Doing the Repair seemed to
help out because it does not take as long now. I fixed one issue now i am
still working on the other issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Problem solved....
Problem was the windows firewall was started and it needed to be stopped and
disabled because we have a firewall set up on our Router.

No, the reason is that the windows firewall was not configured to permit
file and printer sharing. The firewall in the router merely matches
incoming and outgoing requests to be able to send incoming requests to the
correct computer. If there is no incoming request to match with an outgoing
one, the router throws them away.
You should set the firewalls correctly and then restart them.
