I've got a Sony Vaio laptop which has worked perfectly
fine for the last 18 months. Unfortuntely, for some
reason when I now try and read anything either from a
floppy disk or USB storage device the computer
states "the disk in drive X is not formatted, would you
like to format now?". I know there is information on the
disk but can't figure out why it can't access it.

I've done nothing recently to alter the system, apart
from add this year's subscription to Norton Anti-Virus.

Check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices.
