We need to know first what your ideal machine is going to do. We can all go from there.

Be aware you will have an endless amount of suggestions

You will need ...

Motherboard
CPU ... inc cooler
Memory
Hard Drive
Graphics card ... a bloody good one for games
DVDRom drive
Sound Card ... if you want something a wee bit better than MB on-built
A Monitor ... 24" look std for gamers

Sundry Items
A Case to mount it all in, no, it is a sundry item to me.
May/will prob need a Power Supply Unit in that case, as those generally supplied with cheap cases are detrimental to the health of your PC ... a card reader is handy if any members of the family have a digital camera.

DON'T SKIMP ON ANY COMPONENT!!!

All these bits plug into one another, can only go in their own relevant slots, press power switch, install Operating system & other software.

Enjoy!

Are you both going to be using it for gaming?

Do you have a price limit? Or anything to work toward?

Cost wise.

£600 hmm ok now people can start tinkering I guess.

Dont expect a Big Blue though mate. Not if you starting from scratch.
A decent GFx card alone could well take almost 1 quarter of that away

As for a Quad CPU I wouldnt bother unless you wanna put money toward it

Stick with a Core 2 Duo or an X2 for now

Your PSU and Motherboard are two of the most important factors. If they are stable then your system will be aswell. Take that into account

Ok. at the minute i have a 1.8ghz dual core processor, it cant even run the likes of halo 2 or medieval 2 yet it has the specs to play it.

really im looking for one that could play most of the latest shooters out and that they run smoothly.

Is your case ok? In good condition?

Is it a prebuilt system?
