We don't know what came with your computer. The limited letter program built in is called wordpad. Start menu - All Programs - Accessories - Wordpad

Windows XP for Dummies is a good book (I don't care for the
titles, but the entire "Dummies" series are well written for
the new computer user)

Microsoft Works is a good entry level program... includes a
word processor, a spreadsheet and a simple database (keep
track of all your addresses, recipes, etc)

First lesson, Do not in all CAPS, it's considered shouting and it's hard to read.

Please don't use the Caps Lock when Posting - it implies
shouting!

For just an ordinary simple letter try Wordpad -
Start\All Progs - Accessories

You may or may nor have a more advanced Word-Processor on
your Computer but WordPad is fine to begin with

its also not very nice to growl and shout at newly retired computer
illiterate people.
have a heart!
try to be a little more patient with older people and those who claim to be
computer illiterate.
they are trying to fit into this new and difficult world of computers.
you don't have to be so rude to them.
i would have given them the simple directions to write a basic letter
without telling them "how bad they are" so that i don't get them to be even
more discouraged at their first steps in the computer world.
think about it!

Eli,

It would be easy to make this a long post, but I won't.

As a long time PC, and word processor, user (anybody remember
WordStar?), I'm still a novice with each new PC and OS. I'm 73, long
retired, and I found Lesley's request to use accepted netiquette to be
polite and succinct.

We should all consider the sensibilities of those dedicated people who
answer the same old cries for help day after day, by making our own
posts as readable as possible. This includes netiquette, as well as
proper capitalization, and punctuation (a gentle rebuke), to the best of
our abilities (my copout).

Bob

you are a long time computer and word processor user at the age of 73.
the person who started this thread is an elderly person who claims to be
computer illiterate.
it wouldn't be fair to compare your personal experience in computers and
typing to his.
in your reply to me, you did not help me much to emphasize my demand to be a
bit more patient with these new users and not to be angry with him just for
trying to get to know the domain a bit better.
the guy asked for a little help and probably got even more afraid to
approach computers after so many people were angry at the retired man for
mistakenly having his caps lock button stuck and accusing him of shouting...
COME ON!

don't you see that someone new to computers is trying to get some help here
and EVERYONE who decided to respond to him was angry at him for having his
caps lock on?
do you think it will be easier for him now?
how unfriendly can people get?
