Batch/vb script with copy/xcopy in it, Robocopy, NTBackup, SyncToy, Third
party applications...?

Synctoy

Wow...
The formatting on my other response seemed to have been... lost/gone bad.

I apologize.

Hopefully this formatting will be better:

Synctoy
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...o/synctoy.mspx

NTBACKUP:
---------
Q. My new computer came loaded with Windows XP Home Edition, but
Backup is not on it. How can I get it?
A. Backup was originally designed for use in corporate backup
scenarios with tape backup devices not commonly found in the home.
If you want to use Backup, you can install it from the Windows XP
Home Edition CD.

To install the Backup utility manually

1.Insert the Windows XP Home Edition CD.
2.Click Perform additional tasks.
3.Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
4.Double-click the ntbackup.msi file.

For more information, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311246

However - there are people out there who have made it available...
http://home.comcast.net/~cerelli/ntbackup.msi

So get it, install it and read up on how to use it!

How To Use Backup to Back Up Files and Folders on Your Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308422

You still need some sort of external media to store the results
on, but you could schedule the backup to occur when you are not around,
then burn the resultant data onto CD or DVD or something when you are
(while you do other things!)

Another option that I recommend:

Cobian Backup
http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm

A lot of people have wondered about how to completely backup their system
so that they would not have to go through the trouble of a reinstall..
I'm going to voice my opinion here and say that it would be worthless to
do for MOST people. Unless you plan on periodically updating the image
backup of your system (remaking it) - then by the time you use it
(something goes wrong) - it will be so outdated as to be more trouble than
performing a full install of the operating system and all applications.

Having said my part against it, you can clone/backup your hard drive
completely using many methods - by far the simplest are using disk cloning
applications:

Symantec/Norton Ghost
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/

Acronis True Image
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage

BootItT NG
http://terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html

Good Luck!

For file backups SyncToy is a simple and good choice.
For backups of the entire partition I use Ghost, a lot of users also
recommend True Image which come with a short trial period.

The links to these products are in Shenan Stanley's post to your question.

I highly recommend Acronis True Image (as has been mentioned in this
thread). You can back up partitions, entire disks or specific directories
and files. It also has a scheduling function.

As an added benefit, you can also add drives to your system & clone old to
new drives, and manage system restore.

Also, the images it produces are viewable in explorer and yuou can restore
separate files.

It works within windows or it will create a bootable CD from which you can
start, back up or restore on any system with any OS.

I have been using Acronis for my 3 systems for the past year and love it.
Very easy to use and fast where it counts. I was using version 9 Home and
they recently released 10 which I plan to upgrade to.

Hi,

Cannot find the original post, so am replying to this one.

You may want to try Argentum Backup at:

http://www.argentuma.com/backup.html
http://www.argentuma.com/ab.exe (1.2 MB)

to see if it works for you.

Small, fast, and easy to use!
