When I was running Windows 98SE my computer automaticaly shut down after I
shut down windows. Since putting Windows XP on as my operating system, I get
a sign telling me it is safe to shut down my computer and I have to hold the
button for thirty seconds for the shut-down. My laptop shuts down perfectly
with Windows XP. Is there something that I can do to have the automatic
shutdown again. My laptop is a 2004 Hewlet packard and the desktop that I am
having the problem with is a 1999 Packard Bell.

I would be amazed if that Packard Bell has any hardware that is compatible
with Windows XP. Did you run the Hardware Compatibility Wizard (on the XP
install CD) before installing XP on the Packard Bell? By the way, I haven't
seen a Packard Bell system ever since they were run out of the US for
selling "new" computers with used parts.
