As an intermediate user I have a question on accessing my computer. Is there
a log I can check somewhere on my pc which will show when it was switched on,
accessed etc? I know my internet history was cleared by someone else but I
can't confirm when it was used. Any ideas?

Yep,
Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
Select the 'Manage' option.
Next you will see a Window named 'Computer Management', listed in this
window under System Tools select the 'Event Viewer' .
Double click on the logs named 'System' and 'Security' .
You will see numerous entries, including an entry for the last time the PC
was shut down followed by multiple entries (listed by Date and Time) for the
next time the PC was turned on.

Also for additional detail that may help see:

I'm no expert on IE history, but I've played around with viewing IE history
on my WXP SP2 system with IE 6.0 for the past couple of days. My IE is set
up to keep a history for 20 days, and the history page's oldest entry is the
folder for 3 weeks ago.
In another thread, someone mentioned a VBScript called IESpy, a version of
which I downloaded and ran. It gave me a history of over 1000 URLs dating
back to October 2006, and the associated date, time and user. That is a few
more than 20 days of history.

Note: this script uses a couple of small executables that it builds on the
fly because VBScript is inefficent for certain operations they perform. So
use it at your own risk. My antivirus software found no problem with it.

I cannot locate the website I downloaded it from a few days ago, but it
seems to be available here:
