Compressed file problem

I'm running Ultimate 64 bit with a Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 mobo, AMD 5600
CPU and 2 gb of Patriot memory. My system was running fine for a
number of months and then it crapped on itself and I had to do a clean
reinstall. My problems are as follows:

1- Compressed files of any sort such as RAR, ZIP or CAB become
temporarily "corrupted". If I try to run WINRAR or WINZIP on them they
report they are corrupted. If I reboot, they are fine again... for a
while.

2- I get a LOT of "such and such a program has stopped working".
Could be IE, Freecell, or any number of background system services. It
seems to happen more after the first problem occurs.

I have been working with MS and they don't have a clue. I tried to get
them to read the error reports but they are stumped (its level 2 guys)

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Richard

I'm not familiar with 64 bit, but I would run a memory tester.
I had weird file corruption problems trying to install XP, and it turned out
to be bad memory.
