, I get a flag saying compressing files or something like that,
only occasionally.

I can't find in options anywhere to kill that feature and I wonder if that
was what was causing another problem with blank screens I had recently that
a system restore was the only solution?

I have space to spare and don't need them compressed.

That previous problem just came back and I did a system recover to fix it.

I'm now convinced that "compress" thingy is the villain because it came back
immediately after the flag showed it compressing.

OK, I give up. It just did it again.

I have a friend that will help me set up with Mozilla. I still think the
compress feature could have been killed but no one seems to know how. They
say Mozilla is worlds better anyway so I will just have to learn it.
