No, with hard drives being so cheap and big now there is no reason. Plus
that "feature" has never really worked well. I've always removed that
function. You can either just uncheck the option in Disk Cleanup or get rid
of the entry in the registry entirely. [Insert usual caution about working
in the registry.]

Delete this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\CompressOldFiles.

It will do no harm.
File compression on an NTFS drive is safe.
As I mentioned on another thread...it's not at all the same as compressing a
fat16 drive.

The program estimates how much space you will save if old files are
compressed. If you need it then do it. I never do. I have a
100GIG drive, 10 meg is .01% savings

The main problem with this feature is how much time it takes to calculate
when I just want to delete unnecessary files. In XP I always disable this
option by going to "Kellys Korner XP Tweaks" (just google it) and search the
page for "Disk cleanup" for the registry script.
