How do I set Outlook up to automatically complete an email address when
composing an email?

That comes from use. It is a function called autocompletion and accesses
recently used names. So if you have just set up Outlook, it has no names to
remember.

The check names resolution function is quite separate. You can speed things
up by using Ctrl K after typing a name (if it is in the Contacts folder or
Global Address List).
