I am visually impaired and like to choose my own colours
to view web sites. I have never had any problems going to
accessibility and checking ignore web sites colours
A few days ago, the possibility of choosing my background
colour evaporated although I can still choose the text,
the visited and unvisited colours.
An excellent technician tried to find the cause of the
problem but after an hour had to admit defeat. He thinks
that it may be due to a gif file but is it and if so how
to find it?
A most odd problem that the technician had never seen
before.

Do you have a link which demonstrates the problem?
Right-click Properties might show you if the object was a .gif

One trick that I use when there is a problem seeing
due to rotten colour choices by the web page designer
is press Ctrl-a (Select All) in order to see if the page
is any more viewable while its contents are selected.

Even if the problem is due to text being presented
in a .gif and not in HTML the Select All trick can help.

If the problem is strictly reading text which is being rendered
from HTML you can always use View Source and read the text
in a Notepad window.

Sometimes when you want to reformat and read some HTML text
it is hard to find in a Notepad window. In that case what you can do
is select the portion that you are interested in and right-click it for
View Partial Source. Sometimes even that isn't clear enough
(since it is still in HTML) but then you can use View Source on the
Partial Source window and read just that portion, again in a Notepad
window.

View Partial Source is one of the IE5 Progammer tools.
It works fine in IE6.

Here's a link courtesy of Jim Byrd which may help you find it:

(Google Groups search for
"View Partial Source" author:byrd
)
