I have edited the start menu properties and unchecked or deselected FIVE
different search options, but STILL the Start Menu displays the 'Start
Search' box as the default choice when I open it. Thus, I can no longer
CTRL+ESC or Window-key then R for run or C for control panel. I DONT WANT TO
SEARCH THE INTERNET FROM MY START MENU!!!

Can anyone help with removing this awful annoying bar so that a menu is just
a menu? Keyboard shortcuts are USELESS when the default option is a
text-entry box.

Hi Mike,

Tried the classic menu yet?

In the new Vista menu, the search box has functionally replaced the run box
(which, by the way, still pops up if you hit Winkey+r and can still be added
to the start menu). The theory behind it, based on input from test groups,
is to eliminate as many steps as possible in accessing anything on the
system or the internet. No more opening the program or prompt and then
inputting what you want - you simply type it into the search box. If you
don't want to search from the start menu, then don't - open your preferred
browser first.

Press Wn+Up, then you can navigate or type. Alternatively, try the
classic menu.

Insert something clever here.

I don't want the classic menu. I just want the search option gone. 5 FIVE
checkboxes to unselect, and it's still there. Yes, you can type in it like
run, but the problem is it completely negates single-character shortcuts to
menu items, so no ability to press C for control panel or D for documents.
Sure, it'll generally catch what I want if I type out the whole thing, but
that makes this 'feature' more work than before. I can choose whether to add
or remove just about every other feature of the Start Menu but this one. Why
can't MS be consistent?
