Complete freeze or stuttering.

Of late, and 4 times out of 5 when starting my PC, one of the following tends
to happen usually within 15 minutes, though sometimes even after an hour or 2:

a) My whole PC freezes, including the hard drive. I have no keyboard or
mouse functionality, nor access to any other drive. There is complete siezure
of all PC soft/hardware. After 30-60 seconds it usually comes back, then a
few minutes later the same would happen, or;
b) My PC seems to 'stutter'. The mouse movement is not fluent, and if I move
it smoothly left to right, it appears for a fraction of a second to
stop/start etc. Also when this error is happening, music is stuttery as is
any movie download etc. I have full functionality, but game play is obviously
impossible.

For both of these errors, I have to reboot/restart PC as they do not go away
on their own accord. The next time I re-start it is pot luck if I get no
errors for my current session or a mixture of a and b. As a side note, and
not sure if this is connected, I cannot open (by pressing the open button) my
CD RW disc drive (where I can burn CD's etc).

Please help - will I have to completely re-boot to factory settings or is
their a known bug software I can use? Many thanks.

Not sure, haven't tried. Shall I reboot and try? Of course no immediate
guarantee that either of these things will happen first/2nd, 3rd etc. time.
What do you think it could be?
