I use the MS tool:windows Vista upgrade advisor to test my computer ,there
are only a few uncompatible programs and drivers . so I think that Vista has
inherited the compatibility of XP,do you think so ?

Programs that have been written to follow MS guide lines generally work
OK. Many drivers need to be re-written, that will be an issue for a while
as the h/w manufacturers catch up (it was with XP at first), drivers are
usually free though.

Apps that have previously 'got away' with going to places they shouldn't
have gone won't generally work as Vista is more secure. It's likely that
upgrading those apps will cost.

I managed to get everything I used on XP working with Vista. Even Nero is
now working properly with a little bit of cheating!

Currently using RC2 but I'm getting the RTM as soon as it hits the shops in
the UK!

Most of the code for Vista is based on Windows Server 2003 SP1.
Windows Server 2003 is a branch of XP- the same way Longhorn
Server is to Vista. Supposedly, by Vista SP1, Longhorn Server and
Vista will be on the same page, as far as their code bases. So, really
it's not hard to see why many programs from XP still work in Vista.
The jump from XP to Vista, is not the same as going from Win98 to XP.

The problems that have arisen are from totally new things put in Vista-
audio, video, network, and UAC Protection. But, most programs I've
wanted to install, I've gotten to install and work just fine.

A couple of things also:
Nero 7 will work, but the DivX codec will cause the COM surrogate to crash
Quicktime installs and runs fine, but you can't play a video; you will get a
buffer overrun error. This is even with their latest release, 7.1

There are still some drivers that have yet to be released for Vista. Some of
those "less friendly" companies are dragging their feet still. But I have a
feeling that right after the holidays, you will see quite a few of those
"lagging" companies raise up and start a madd driver release.
On the other softwares, there have been many who have been working hard to
release compatible software. Nero is still working out their bugs, quicktime
is working on theirs too. Which, when you think about it, they have no
choice. The last thing Apple wants is for people to give up on the Ipods and
move to the Zen or Zune players. Luckly, I have few problems with my itunes
software.
Many games are on board, especially plauying with the DX10 front. The word
from many internet sources is that at, or shortly after the Cista release,
there are supposed to be a bunch of new games released that play to the
specific strenghts of Vista. From what I hear, they should lite up those
dual core and quad core processors something fierce
By the release, bet that you will be ready to rock.

Note: It is a new operating system, and as the old saying goes, out with the
old. Understand that there will most likely be some, much older, equipment
that will not be supported. Time to put away that 14,400 modem. It won't be
supported probably. And the win 95 Version of Myst will most likely be a
junker too. (I know it takes 10 years to finish it, but you have to move
on). I only say that because I tried. HEY! the classics still live on!

Hope this helps
